Imagine a niche fashion label targeted specifically towards coffee people. What would it look like?

Although many cafes and roasters have had their shot at designing merchandise, I’m yet to spot a label of streetwear clothing with direct appeal towards people ingrained in coffee culture. Imagine a line designed by coffee people for coffee people. (If this is something you’ve come across, please do enlighten me!)

At the risk of stereotyping, it’s easy to observe particular patterns across coffee culture. And there’s no denying that style and coffee go hand-in-hand. In the same way grunge pubs attract leather jackets and yoga studios attract lycra, cafes with good design tend to attract people with particular sets of styles.

Before I go into to detail, a small disclaimer: I am by no means a fashion designer, nor do I have a wardrobe that would blow your mind. But I have a devout love for both fashion and coffee, so here are three of the looks I’ve observed.

A Quick-Fire Guide on Dressing Like a Coffee Person (Ladies’ Edition)

Number One. The Italian Coffee Girl.

This is the casual-chic look you’d find on the streets of Italy or Paris. Think fitted trousers or loose jeans; a leather boot or elegant flat; designer handbag, and flawlessly matched jewellery.

It’s put together, smart and, well, classy. Here the accessories are key to tying it all together.

Number Two. The Vintage Hipster.

It’s all about the plaid pants, vintage tee, chuck tailors and sunnies. Add a pop of red lippy and you’re set to go. This look is bold, individual and requires a certain level of attitude to pull off.

Number Three. The Bondi Look.

Peppered around Bondi you’ll find groups of mums at their local cafe post school drop-off, or gatherings of girls enjoying their skinny lattes and avo toast post yoga sesh. They say birds of a feather flock together, and for this reason the Bondi Look is very distinct.

Think white linens, cashmere knits, coordinated athleisure and jute totes. Add whatever pair of crisp white sneakers you fancy (SpringCourts or Supergas are a common go-to), or birkenstocks and you’re set. This look is all about clean, beachside comfort.

Wherever you are in the world, coffee culture has grown into something intrinsically linked with design and fashion. What styles would you add to the list?
